Hey guys. I was really looking forward to what you had to say about some of my questions for class today, but unfortunately we didn't have time for them. Here they are:
1. Why is the problem of homophobia and gender roles statistically more of a problem for males? Why don't females feel the same amount of pressure to be feminine/heterosexual?
2. How do you think females contribute to males' pressure to "be a man", i.e. how does modern female sexuality influence the average male (or doesn't it)?
3. Where does homophobia come from? Is it a natural feeling of confusion and fear or is it created by our society?
Let me know what you think!
1. I think that homophobia is largely created by society or the environment around which we need to live. Most of society believe that men need to be strong, with less of emotions, mainly focused on career and making money. Because females are more emotional and tend to have closer relation with female friends, people get used to seeing such a thing and doesnt treat it as a weird thing. Moreover, the popular believe that gays are much different than ordinary men, puts them in very unfavorable view. Males doesnt want to be associated with being gay thats why they tend to act how man should act, and every other behavior is treated as something weird and bad.
ReplyDeleteI think females contribute to a man's pressure to "be a man" just as much as men do. I feel that men pressure each other (guy code) into being masculine, all-powerful, and lacking emotion, but I do think females have a role in that too. Men may try to act manly to get the attention of the women because I think guys think this is a desirable trait for them. I don't think I'm wrong in saying guys would probably act more manly when they are in the presence of women instead of when their surrounded by their guy friends. In today's world, sexuality is definitely a more prevalent issue and both girls and guys feel the effects of it. In going back to Tuesday's class, we thought women are becoming much more interested in sex than they used to be, so I think this would only add to the pressure of men to be more like the standard male model our society knows.
